190 & 491 Skilled Nominated Visa

State and territory governments can nominate applications under a broad range of occupations on the relevant skilled occupation list to fill skilled shortages within their local labour markets 

Benefits of seeking state nomination 

  • An additional 5 points for a Skilled Nominated (Permanent) visa (subclass 190) towards the Department of Home Affairs points test 
  • An additional 15 points for a Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) towards the Department of Home Affairs points test 

Skilled Nominated (Permanent)  Subclass 190 Visa 

Applicants must obtain a minimum of 65 points on a points assessment and must be nominated by a participating State or Territory government in Australia. 

After having Subclass 190 Visa, you and your family must live and work for the first two years in the state or territory that nominated you and then anywhere in Australia. 

The visa allows you to: 

  • Study, work and live in Australia permanently without any restrictions 
  • Get healthcare coverage from Medicare 
  • Apply for Australian citizenship 
  • Be a sponsor of eligible family members or relatives for permanent residency 
  • Visit Australia frequently for five years from the date visa is granted 

To receive an approval for this visa, you must have: 

  • Not yet turned 45 years of age 
  • Nominate an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list 
  • Nomination by an Australian state or territory government agency 
  • Skills assessed by the appropriate Australian skills assessing authority 
  • At least Competent English 
  • A minimum of 65 points on a points assessment 

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) – Subclass 491 Visa 

Applicants must obtain a minimum of 65 points on a points assessment and must be nominated by a participating State or Territory government in Australia.  

The Subclass 491 visa allows you to: 

  • This visa allows you to work, study and live in Australia 
  • This is a provisional visa and allows you to stay in Australia for up to 5 years. After 3 years on this visa you may be eligible to meet the requirements for a permanent Subclass 191 visa. 

To receive an approval for the Subclass 491 visa, you must have: 

  • Not yet turned 45 years of age 
  • Nominate an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list 
  • Nomination by an Australian state or territory government agency 
  • Skills assessed by the appropriate Australian skills assessing authority 
  • At least Competent English 
  • A minimum of 65 points on a points assessment 

Subclass 191 visa (Permanent) can be applied after meeting conditions, such as: 

  • Live, study or work in a regional area for 3 years while you are holding a 491 visa 
  • Show annual salary of at least $53,900 for 3 years
